Event Type

Every year, the botanical garden unveils its captivating nighttime experience, Enchanted: Forest of Light, a stunning event that harmoniously blends interactive art installations with radiant, luminous forests. The enchanting display is set against a backdrop of beautifully illuminated trees and ethereal soundscapes, creating an immersive atmosphere that captivates visitors of all ages.

Event Details

Running from November 17 through January 5, this year’s edition introduces a delightful new feature: the garden’s model railroad, which will be spectacularly lit for the holiday season. Last year’s event saw the rearrangement of several existing installations and the opening of a new illuminated section near the rose garden. This area is home to HYBYCOZO’s mesmerizing three-dimensional light sculptures, including their popular spinning designs that draw visitors in with their enchanting movement.

Another highlight from the previous year is found on the main lawn, where sculptor Tom Fruin showcased kaleidoscopic, stained-glass-inspired houses. These vibrant structures were flanked by smaller installations that allowed guests to interact by pressing buttons to control their lighting, adding an engaging element to the experience.

A Timeless Experience

While Enchanted maintains many of its beloved features, including a field of faux tulips that undulate with waves of sparkling color and the misty allure of the “Ancient Forest,” it continues to deliver an enchanting journey. The “Rainbow Sycamore” columns remain a favorite, allowing guests to tap and interact, while the overall experience remains intuitively immersive. True to its botanical garden setting, most installations showcase the natural beauty of Descanso Gardens’ flora, offering a refined contrast to typical light shows.

Although some of the newer additions around the rose garden may seem somewhat conventional, Enchanted retains its magical essence overall. However, ticket prices have increased, starting at $35 for general admission and peaking at $45 on weekends and holidays—significantly higher than a daytime visit. Fortunately, visitors will appreciate that parking remains free, a rarity among light displays.

Visitor Experience

Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, as the route through Enchanted spans approximately one mile. The paths are clearly marked and mostly flat, though some areas may become soft and muddy following rain. It’s advisable to dress warmly, as evening temperatures in La Cañada Flintridge can drop to the mid-40s during this time of year. Attendees should allocate at least an hour to fully explore and enjoy all the enchanting features that Enchanted has to offer, ensuring a memorable and magical evening in the heart of the garden.
