This specialized course is aimed at acute care therapists working with patients who have sustained spinal cord injuries (SCI). It focuses on equipping therapists with essential tools and strategies to optimize care for SCI patients, including managing complications, preventing shoulder pain, and facilitating functional transitions.
Course Overview: Participants will be immersed in a combination of instructional videos, hands-on lab sessions, attendee case studies, and small group discussions. The course emphasizes early interventions that prevent further complications and promote functional recovery, alongside detailed strategies to prevent common challenges like shoulder pain. Attendees will also learn about optimal techniques for bed mobility, transfers, and strengthening exercises that aid patient rehabilitation from the acute stage.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and address common complications experienced by SCI patients and understand how these impact acute care interventions.
- Prioritize early interventions for SCI patients at various injury levels to promote optimal recovery.
- Develop shoulder pain prevention and strengthening programs tailored to SCI patients.
- Apply key strategies for improving patient movement and functional progression, depending on the level of spinal injury.
- Create and implement individualized intervention plans through case study analysis to enhance patient outcomes in acute care settings.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
- Physical Therapists (PTs): Approved for 7.5 contact hours by the PT Board of California.
- Occupational Therapists (OTs): Qualifies for half of the required Professional Development Units (PDUs) related to occupational therapy services.
