In a historic move for Los Angeles’ dance scene, Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center will open its 2024–2025 season with a landmark performance by the celebrated Brooklyn-based company, Urban Bush Women. This groundbreaking ensemble, revered for its dedication to highlighting the experiences and stories of Black women, is set to mark its 40th anniversary by being the first professional dance theater company to perform at the iconic Mark Taper Forum. Known for its electrifying and socially resonant performances, Urban Bush Women brings a powerful narrative and bold storytelling style that has captivated audiences for decades.
For their West Coast debut at this legendary venue, Urban Bush Women will perform SCAT!… The Complex Lives of Al & Dot, Dot & Al Zollar, a theatrical jazz-infused love story set against the backdrop of the Great Migration. Rooted in a jazz club atmosphere, this production follows the intertwined lives of Al and Dot Zollar, exploring themes of resilience, love, and self-discovery in the context of one of the most transformative eras in American history. The piece not only celebrates the beauty of Black culture and music but also offers a deeper exploration of identity, migration, and legacy.
