This winter, the L.A. Zoo invites visitors to experience its enchanting holiday tradition, L.A. Zoo Lights, remaining open after dark most nights through January. This year’s edition, titled “Animals Aglow,” promises to dazzle guests with a spectacular array of oversized animal-shaped lanterns, creating a vibrant and colorful trail that highlights the zoo’s beloved inhabitants.

Attendees can expect to encounter a delightful collection of illuminated creatures, including parrots, bears, butterflies, scorpions, and owls, all animated with playful movements that bring them to life. The event also pays homage to the flora of the zoo, particularly with a stunning display featuring a golden glow in the field of grazing bison, enhancing the immersive experience.

One of the most notable updates from last year’s event was the transformation of the northern section of the grounds into the Winter Wildlands area. Gone are the cramped light tunnels, replaced instead by a visually striking polar playground. This area is a riot of rainbow lights and icy structures, ensuring that visitors leave with a sense of wonder and fulfillment, rather than wishing for more.

While the event has steered clear of overtly Christmas-themed elements—taking a more thematic approach—L.A. Zoo Lights still offers plenty of interactive features for guests to enjoy. Children and adults alike can engage with color-changing hopscotch paths, illuminated swings, and a kaleidoscopic mirror shell perfect for dancing. Glowing seesaws provide even more fun as guests bounce under the dazzling lights.

To make the most of this festive experience, it is advisable to purchase timed tickets in advance, available in two sessions each night, to minimize wait times. For those looking to save a bit, attending on “value” nights can reduce admission by up to $6. Comfortable shoes are a must, as the light displays span only about a third of the zoo grounds, but the walk is mostly uphill. This magical evening promises to be a memorable highlight of the holiday season for families and friends alike.
