This transformative workshop, titled “Corporeal Reformation,” invites participants to explore the body’s deep and spiritual need for reorganization and re-shifting. The term “corporeal reformation” signifies a profound process of remembering the inherent connection between the body and well-being, acknowledging that this journey is ongoing and ever-evolving. In this workshop, participants will engage in grounding stances, poetic dance notation (Butoh-fu), improvisational image-making, and discover the body as a phenomenon, utilizing Butoh, an avant-garde dance form born in post-WWII Japan. Butoh is a rebellion against Western beauty standards, focusing on controlled movements that embrace imperfection, often drawing inspiration from nature and the earth’s gravitational pull.

About the Facilitator:

The workshop is led by artist Josie J (also known as divinebrick), a self-described iconoclast and seeker of the sacred primordial being. Josie J’s name represents the decolonization of the self and the remembrance of one’s connection to the soil and the earth. Josie J has studied Butoh dance with Koichi and Hiroko Tamano, Butoh masters, as well as with influential dancer Oguri in Venice, CA. Additionally, Josie J has practiced Gung Fu and Tai Chi under the guidance of the late Sifu James Ibrao. Josie J’s work combines movement, sound, visual arts, and performance to delve into the subconscious, textures, tones, and subtle sensations of human nature and the natural world.

This workshop is a unique opportunity for participants to reconnect with their bodies, engage in somatic exploration, and open themselves to the deep, ancestral wisdom embedded in the body’s movement.
